How Thickly can Adhesive be Applied?

I have to tile bathroom walls and was wondering how thickly tub adhesive can be applied as the walls are badly out of shape around the doorframe. There are a few spots where the adhesive may have to be about 20mm deep. Would this ever dry out? I know powder adhesive would be better but the customer has already bought all the adhesives from the tile supplier.

4mm is the max for packing out because adhesive drys by air contact so any thicker then it needs to be cement based.

Fekin is right there mate,tub adhesive applied would shrink back...therefore tiles will not sit flush with one another.You must insist the customer either pays for a bag of powder based adh or the job will be comprimamised,or you could build the area up with your offcuts to bring to required level.....Gaz

20mm is too deep for cement adhesive. Maximum of 12mm in localised area. Can you not reboard wall around door frame?

a newbie asking here. can't you use filler, let it dry out then tile over it. Or what about carrying a small bag of plaster around for those small jobs.

Some of the cowboys I've seen over the years can build it out 12 inches:happy:

I always use powdered Mapei slow
set on walls because of this exact problem. Bucket gear is fine on plastered platerboard etc, but on old houses etc, I use the powder. But then you have to remember to use a good acrylic bond, like nicobond, ardex, as the powder gear could come off.

There is bucket gear with built in bond, but the troble with bucket gear is you can only use a 6mm trowel. Powder gear you can go thicker in some areas.
