Durabase matting and porcelain tiles

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi all

So it's best to start saying that Im way out of my comfort zone on tiling - think I was born to be a keyboard warrior in an office for a day job!

I've recently brought a new house and have been replacing the ensuite with the help of YouTube mainly and a bit of plumbing from the father in law.

I'm now at the point where I need to lay the floor tiles. They are 8mm thick porcelain tiles from B&Q and coverage is around 1.5m2. They will be going onto timber floorboards and have been recommended using durabase matting first before. This is where I get confused. A few YouTube videos I have seen talk about using a thinset mortar to put the matting down. I've been using Mapei super flexible adhesive, can I use that to lay the matting?

Also, do I need to use a primer between the floorboards and the matting? If so, what's the best to use? Could I use pva glue as it's such a small space to prime and I'm not likely to be tiling again for a while.

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt, first of all don’t use pva glue use a suitable primer such as sbr.
For wooden floors I would advise you to use cement boards instead of matting.
Make sure all the floorboards are screwed down first and follow the manufacture recommendation for which ever cement board you use as there are different brands and have slightly different installation processes

As above, fit hardie backer or no more ply as per there online instructions, then tile using a flexible cement based adhesive

Thanks for your help on this. Picked up some hardie backer today and ill get to work on it over the next couple of days. Reading the fitting instructions I have to use some adhesive to set the board and screw in. Do I have to wait for that to set or can I lay my tiles the same night? It's only 7 tiles that I needs to put down
