I am not a time served tiler, I am a time served HVAC pipefitter Welder, but haven't really done that for years. Too many years on the clock really... I have never understood anyone getting as upset or uptight as some of you guys on here. Don't you guys realize that the very people you are saying are idiots are in turn also giving you extra work. How many of you have had to go in after someone elses bodge job, a few I would think. You can normally charge what you like and within reason take as long as you like due to you being an expert. I have been on some of these short courses and I have to say while it will not make you a time served person in that particular trade it does give you a start. I then worked with other tilers which was when my learning really began, but without the courses I wouldn't have even got a look in. I have also seen a few time served trades people in general, my trade included which are an absolute waste of space. One of the best pipefitters I worked with never did any formal training. Don't be too quick to rubbish everybody for having a go, there is always someone a lot better than you.

i wouldnt like to rubbish anyone for having ago as long as its in there own home hence the saying D.I.Y do it yourself...

however as soon as you step in to a customers house to be paid for a quality job, then you should know 100% what your doing....

Have to say though that one of the best plasterers I know only started when he "gave it a go" and found he had a natural talent for it.

I know of a few tradesmen like that Muse.

Also know some tradesmen who are time-served who are not too good at all too though.

So you get 'em both I guess.

It's like with most things. Some people can play a guitar, sometimes effortlessly and others can practice and be taught for many years but just not have the natural affinity for it.

When I first started out, my boss was one of those old Italian Terrazzo men, one of the first to do Terrazzo over here. I was lucky he taught me everything, to pass the knowledge on (hes in his late 70's). I will forever be grateful to him, even if he could be a bit of a whatsit most days. The old ways and skills are a dying art now, which saddens me. People have to learn these skills, or the specialist trades disappear. If someone wants to learn something I do not see any reason not to teach them, like Muse says some people do have a natural talent for these things, others simply do not even if they have been doing it for years.

Pebbs
