Hi there

A conservatory company rang me the other day and asked my floor tiling square meterage price. I said twenty five pounds for normal ceramic. What should I have said to him - bearing in mind they could put a lot of work my way. Just wondered how you would work a deal out. Should I have said it depends on how much work you give me. Can anyone please point me in the right direction - thanks.

Best Wishes

:thumbsup:I'd go for £30, (unless business is slowing down), in conservatories you can get all sorts of angled cuts!

There may ufh, Diagonal or borders involved, Everything on it's own merits. £30m2 is a good starting point

I would have said, I price each job on it's merits. 6m2 conservatories don't bring in much cash at £25/m2, yet you would almost certainly be there more than 1 day, start to finish. In addition, if the installers haven't done agood job of giving you a flat floor to work from, you will need to make good etc.

I get quite a few people phoning up asking for meterage rates or quotes over the phone, as Grouters points out each job can only be priced on each set of circumstances/conditions. If you feel like there is a possibility of regular work with this company I would consider doing a couple of jobs at an individual price rate, if all things go well then try and negotiate a approved/prefered fitter contract.

The company I subbie for start at £175 - £200 for laying one tile, you cant apply a meterage rate on small jobs. The same way a day rate wont work on a 30sq m floor.

Just like previous posts.
I made an introduction to a local conservatory company about a year ago. When they asked for a metre rate I said that I would be ballpark £28 to £35 depending on tiles etc., but if it was a small area I would be looking for a day rate.

1st job they gave me was 50m2 kitchen, diner and conservatory so I did it at metre rate. Now they phone me every time that they have to price some tiling to discuss whether I want to charge a day rate or metre rate.

Build a good relationship with them and you will be able to earn whatever you think you are worth / need.

Good luck.

sounds like they're happy to have you captain, a lot of firms want the decent jobs on day rate and the awkward jobs per metre. nice one
