weird situation to be in for sure, but i'd be straight down that tile shop and sticking that credit note right up their backs....
what shop and where was it.?

It may not be transferable and anyone on here could possibly get a trade discount from the retail credit note they have given you.
Statutory rights would allow you to a refund if they have already taken 20% off you.
They seem to want it all ways £600+ for nothing and more business.

Totally agree with Timeless ,you should demand the money not a line of credit

As soon as you left the shop they have no obligation to give you a cash refund. Tbh only if they were faulty could you have had cash. If their policy is they will charge you 20% to restock and give you the rest as credit then that is up to them.

i thought they'd have to give a cash refund unless the receipt has been lost? i'd check with trading standards

it all depends on there t/c which should be on there receipt, most tile shops give a refund less 20% restocking, and will only apply if you return them within 30 days..

as you say most tile shops, i'd defo check it out and also check if the credit note is transferable. btw i'm after a dewalt 24000 on the cheap if the tile shop mentioned has one in stock

Trading standards will tell you as I have. Used to be my job to know these things. A receipt is simply proof of purchase and nothing more.

If you buy anything from any shop you are not entitled to a refund under any law unless it is proven it was faulty at the point of purchase in which case your statutory rights give you a refund entitlement.

Most places have a refund policy as a matter of customer service.
