matting

Got to look at a job tomorrow where a wet room has been stripped of tiles and a "rubber matting" is remaining. I am guessing that this is something like the Homelux matting that can be used to tank rooms. This has been in situ for about 8 years. I dont know anything else at the mo (substrate etc)

What should I be looking for as to whether this is still suitable to tile on ? - apart from the obvious holes / cracks / current bonding etc. Would it be best to remove it anyway as a matter of course? If it needs removing, are the mats better than the paint on tanking? I have only ever used Homelux matting for tanking, hence the Q's!

never had to remove it but i know its super sticky stuff to lay down and that silicone sealant has an undesired effect on it apparently..
I would imagine if it could not be removed then it could be overlaid with something similar.
