Where do i start?

Hi,

I have been doing my office job for the past 7 years now and to say its getting a bit boring is a understatement. I have a handfull of mates who from Electricians to alarm fitters and they keep telling me to get in to a trade so i looked into the Tiling side of things.I have always been interested in the art of Tiling.

So i need some guidance on where to start i have no experiance so obviously training is going to be my first step.

Any help or advise would be deeply appreciated

hello 1210,i done the same thing march last year,i knew i enjoyed and was interested in tiling and was also hating my job and had been for a few years. i sourced a good tiling school and went and done a course,,from that i went back to my existing job for 3 months and setup my business on the side,,after 3 months i had enough work to quit my job and go alone.it was difficult to get consistent jobs through the door at first but by august i was booked solid till xmas.this year however has been poor so far but still surviving,wish you all the best . plenty good schools advertise on this website with feedback available,also this site after my course has been the source of most of my knowledge and couldt have acheived what i have so far without it,

hi and welcome to the forum

Best advice i can give would be to get yourself on a course and start off part time just to test the water.

For the time being i would stay in your office job as its regular money each month and increase the tiling as you get the work in.

I have just finished tiler training at North East Tiling, and am setting out on my own just now, A bit scary at first trying to get the work in but I am starting to pick up regular work now.

Best advice I can give you is once you are complete your taining is to get your name out there, cards, flyers anything and everything you can think of to drum up trade! (especially on the days when you are not tiling). Also make sure your first jobs are done really well and take your time and dont rush ensure they are good quality finishes as word of mouth is a great way of getting in work.

Thanks for those replys they have helped.What kind of traing would u recommend shouls i do a NVQ or just start off on the normal traing route?

Would find a good training centre and go from there , get some tiling under your belt and then think about doing your nvq

I wouldn't bother with any training, if you can butter bread then u can tile, theres no art to it.

lol,dont listen to figaro.i hope he was just having a laugh.
if there is no art to tiling, then come have a look at a "finished"job i recently seen and was asked to improve.it couldnt be done.client had to start all over again.

anyone can put a tile on a wall. a professeional tiler makes it look good!

dont pack your day job in yet, but do get time off to do a tiling course and then decide if its for you

if you still want to tile then do as the other lads suggest. get some work in and done as it can be very different working for a client than doing set pieces at college

then if its still for you..................go for it, hand your notice in, you wont regret it

tiling is an art..............learn it and you will never go hungry

any idiot can butter a tile and stick it to the wall but a tradesman does it right and wouldnt use that method anyway...............as you will learn
