Wetroom/Tanking Advice

Hi all,

New here so please go easy on me 🙂

As part of some refurbishment works I'm doing, I'd like to install a couple of shower wet rooms on the first floor. At the moment, the floors and walls are all WBP ply. I'm also having a wet UFH system fitted using an overlay board of 10mm on top of the existing ply floor.

Can I directly tank the WBP ply walls or should I look to replace with HardieBacker boards or something similar? Can anyone recommend any good systems I should look into for a shower former tray and tanking?

Hi, ply and hardibacker are both completely unsuitable for wet areas in my opinion and experience.
Sure, you can tank hardibacker - but you can also tank plasterboard and that is far cheaper!

Better to use a board like Wedi with a good bead of 610 adhesive up the joints and on the fastener heads. Tape the internal corners with 610 adhesive too.

I had a look at that Nassboards site - looks like generic imported (i.e. risky quality) stuff.
Personally I wouldn't risk using anything other than Wedi or Schluter.
It costs more, but it's proven and easier/faster to install.

Point noted regarding Wedi/Schluter boards. How about the walls which are brick/skimmed? Is there a suitable product form either of the above that can be used in wet areas? Or am I better off using a paint-on tanking system like from Mapei? And the ply floor with a Ditra mat is ok?
