Hi there

My question is about waterproofing. In a bathroom with a normal shower over the bath at one end do you tank always? If so do you tank the wall the shower is on and the wall at the side how far do you go. Would you coat three walls?

Warm Regards

Howard

Hi there

To clarify would you tank the bath wall areas.

You would tank as far as the water would from the shower would reach, if the water would spray onto all three walls then you would tank all three walls, more often than not though it would just be the two walls.

Thanks. Customer has just a shower head from tap. Would you still tank?

Warm Regards

Howard

In all honesty, it is really up to the customer. They may not be prepared to shell out for the extra cost. Tanking is something that I always suggest to my customers but so far only 1 has taken up the option, prefering to keep costs down initially and risk potential damage at some time in the future. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

In reality, with a tap fed shower head, the water pressure isn't going to be that great so the potential for water to penetrate through the grout or pass a leaky bit is not that great so it may not be a problem.

What are the walls made from?

If it was a power shower then i would recommend tanking...but it also depends on how often the shower is used..not all domestic jobs warrant tanking as they are not used enough to constantly make the grout wet thus causing water ingression...If a customer will go with the tanking then all the better but it isn't necessary all the time....

Hi - for what it's worth I tanked mine - just the 2 walls directly affected by the power shower.
Used the Bal system. Ran tape in corners and because of basic instructions decided to run tape along edge of bath too. I Silicon bath edge to wall below level of tiles to be on the safe side. Made sure it came in under where tiles would go. All in all very pleased with result.

Walls are plaster skim. Used Ardex AM100 to reskim 2mm after taking existing tiles off. Thanks for the replies. Will always suggest tanking.

This site is great!
