Hi,

I'm about to tile over an old but good condition lath and plaster wall over a bath. I'm going to use no more ply cement board, should I strip the old lath and plaster away and use 12mm board or would I get away with 6mm over the existing plaster? The studs are easy to locate.

Cheers

Hi if the depth isn't an issue and the studs can be easily located may be best to over board it.. have you considered using a 6mm foam backer board instead with the washer fastenings? Just quicker and lighter to install. I've removed a lot of lath and plaster before and hell of a lot of mess, plus hard to stop at a point once its disturbed. So in this case over boarding may be the best option đź‘Ť

I have a similar job in the pipeline. With regard to the over boarding would you stick it with https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ also or just screw it? Also what thickness of board would be the best option.

Thanks JK. Yeah, depth is no issue. Never used the foam backer board. What brand is it and where would you recommend buying it? Presume it would be fine for 600 x 300 ceramic tiles?

I'd remove any loose paint and old https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ first, then prime with some dilute SBR. Stick the boards to the walls with a decent flexible cement-based https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ (trowel on not dot and dab). Then screw through to the joists.. can also tape any joints with fibreglass tape.. 6mm boards are fine. Topps sell the Wedi boards now đź‘Ť

Just checking, are you saying this would be ok for 6mm no more ply cement board as well? Is the fact there will be no horizontal noggins at the end of the boards an issue? Or are the studs enough considering the lath and plaster will provide some degree of rigidity?

Thanks again
