Hi Grumpy, As it states in the british Gypsum site book; The total weight of tiles and plaster applied over a bonding agent (pva again) is limited to 20 kg, Therefore consideration should be given to tiling directly to the background. I would'nt want to be putting that weight of tiles on float and set as the finish is what the tiles are holding onto.
Hmmmm! Thanks for your reply whitebeam. Looks likee my training and notes may be wrong then.

Sorry grumps ..just re-looked at the photos.. i thought it was sand cement background......deffo 20kg.........still wants dry lining though....🙂

Well, having checked your info Whitebeam, looks like I need to have a chat with my training provider and clarify why I appear to have been given wrong information. Hmmmmmm.....................

I'll give British Gypsum a ring monday and speak to there tech, The site book is the most upto date

another option woulld be to batton and screw the boards on if your not tight on for space leave the old plaster and fix over the top save the mess of stripping and carting away and save on the drying time of the adhesive.,, thats wot i would do..

i dont know how you can come to that conclusion that a wall that has been plastered to a brick back ground automatically allows 40kg/m2?? what if the brick was engineering brick or any dense format?? if you look at a backing plaster under stress, then you can see that it breaks away alot of the time before you reach the brick/blockwork. it is designed for its thermal values more than its residual strength.

you would be right if it was sand and cement render but i agree with whitebeam. if its plastered then its 20kg/m2...when i say plastered i mean any gypsum backing plaster and multi/board finish...
