hi
was working with a tiler yesterday(old school)
couple of things i need to question

1, he told me that you must prime plywood even exterior grade with the dreaded PVA before tiling i was told not to use pva in any tiling install as it breaks down with the moisture in the adhesive and i was told you dont have to prime plywood.

is this true?

2, He tiled and grouted in the same day the adh' was readymixed weber and only been on walls a couple of hours i was told leave it over night "he said you only leave it cos the tiles can move but thats the good thing about weber it holds the tiles well enough to grout in the same day"

is this true?

Hi Matt,

I contacted BAL tech re: priming ply and they said that all surfaces should be primed with pva except the surface being tiled, the reason was purely to stop the ply from absorbing moisture from anywhere else such as the floor below. personally I have never bothered priming ply unless I was putting it over concrete, stone substrate. I always pva a concrete floor prior to tiling though.

I too have never grouted tiles that I have laid that day if using ready mixed, I wouldn't want to take the risk of the adhesive not drying fully. I was once told by another tiler that he mixed ready tub with rapidset to allow him to grout same day. I would be interested in the views of the more experienced tilers on that one.

As for the ply then , do not pva, tells you on the bal bag! Grouting same day, not a problem, bold letters on front of rapidset bag GROUT AFTER 3 HOURS, ive always done it where applicable and had no problems. Even on your walls with spacers and wedges in places and 4 or 5 hours of drying time they aint movin mate! P.s. also tells you to prime reverse side of ply.

Iv'e grouted same day - no phone calls to return yet......

I PVA everything being tiled. For some reason, I find the tiles stick better to the wall. I was told to PVA by an old school tiler ages ago. And it works for me ok.... 🙂

I think the difference is, if you bang the PVA on thick, then you may have problems. But a weak 3:1 never hurts anybody.

I always compare the PVA theory to plastering; the reason why you PVA before you put the plaster on, is to prevent rapid drying due moisture suction, and preventing the plaster from falling off / cracking.

Same rules apply to tile adhesive as far as im concerned. But thats my opinion of course and it works for me 😛

Was a lot more important in yonder years but with modern adhesives you are well covered, long as its bal:wink_smile:

i have never pva'd ply at all cos i was told not to so just to clarify i should pva the under side of ply but not the side i am tiling and pva is ok to use or should i be using such things like BAL prime APD?

Some adhesives do contain the mix already, but as I said - a weak PVA mix doesn't do any harm to be sure. Saves on the confusion of it all don't you think?

I think the guy from BAL was explaining to prime the underside of the floorboard? I don't quite get why though..... that would mean pulling the whole floor up lol

Hes right about grouting same day, as long as the tiles dont move. I always grout same day, dont be worrying that the adhesive wont dry , it will, however i always use cement based adhesives. Pva wil revert to its original state if it comes into contact with water so better to use polymer based primers.
