Hi lads ive laid some travertine tiles today and noticed pen marks ive left on i tried to wipe them with a sponge but it would not come of what is the best way to remove them

cheers

Howard

its a bic pen it has a very fine tip like a pinhead but it does go on like a felt tip dave

On a scrap piece of travertine mark it with the pen...leave to dry and try removing it with nail polish remover....if it works with no adverse reaction on the stone then hey presto 1 happy chappy........

cheers dave ive just asked the wife for some when i told her what it was for she said try deodorant that will remove it

Had a plumber write me a message on some travertine i had laid with felt tip pen, couldn't remove it, had to remove tiles...:furious3:

I saw a floor once where the tiler marked the all the cuts before he cut and stuck them with a number in non permanent marker on the reverse side .
Came back next day and the numbers had all leached up through 30mm thick stone and were clearly visible on the top.

Very difficult to get out but oxybrite crystals worked in the end from supermarket.
make sure you do a test first to see if effects travertine though.
incidentally pencil can be very difficult to get off some stones, but there is cleaner called brickie which is non acidic which you can get from builder centre that works very well. again test first

dont know if it'l do trick but doing a friends bathroom other wk and marked it with a marker pen and even numbered it in a few places.went to wipe off and wouldnt budge.started panicking then as friend due back and started looking round house for anything really,to try and saw this hairspray, sprayed it straight on,washed over with sponge and it came off almost immediately, thank god.id never felt such relief, espescially as she'd paid nearly £2000 for tiles.they were porcelain.i wont use a marker agen anyway but you all want to give it a test.

If the trav is unfinished I'd go with extra fine steel wool, for getting marks off most tile I find vinegar(not malt)and water works in most cases, good luck,
Mike

hi guys ive tried nail polish remover deodorant wire wool sandpaper vinegar hair spray it will not come off i will try acetone or oxybrite crystals tomorrow:mad2:

This might work howard.....
Lithofin....
Oil-Ex 250ml
A solvent based paultice designed to draw out ingrained staining such as wax, grease, oil, paint and Silicon stains from natural and artificial stone, porcelain, ceramics, quarry , slate, terracotta,

You will be able to get it from CTD......

cheers dave theres a ctd not to far away from me i wiil try this before the acetone and let you know how i go on

just to keep you all updated i could not find a shop that sells acetone so ive not managed to get rid of the marks yet ive finished the job and the customer has not noticed i will not leave it like this ive got a tile with pen on to test anyway when i got there monday the lady complained about the dust from my wet cutter she told me ive not cut the tiles right i should have water in my cutter to stop the dust (they are travertine) so i told her i have to dry cut or they might stain she said well the builder who's working here tells me they should be wet cut so i said why dint you get him to tile seems he knows so much it really annoys me how builders know everything:furious3:

as far as i know pure acetone is a harmful product so you wont get hold of it.......so nail polish remover is the next best thing......did you have a look for that paste i put up....?

yeah i tried my local ctd on friday they recommended another product but did not have it in stock it was really expensive so i will only buy it as a last resort and as for pure acetone i worked on a chemical plant for 8 years before i became a tiler they used it there all the time so i might be able to get 1 of the lads to get some for me
