Rescue me!lol. Is electric underfloor heating under travertine mosaic tiles worthwhil

Hello,
I ama floor tiling virgin and attemtping to go for the double with installing electric underfloor heating at the same time on a concrete floor.

Can anyone advise me if this is a sound idea in a 2 square metre bathroom..

would like to know..

a. Is devimat a good option? or another easy to fit reliable/inexpensive mat?
b. Is this idea sound based on cheaper running costs comparedd to gas radiators or an electric blower in the bathroom?
c. A good brand of floor adhesive to use(preferably ready mixed)?
d. Do you think I'll have much trouble laying two inch square stone mosaics on top of the cables as I ama beginner with floors?

Any opinions shared will be greatly accepted..

Ede

Hi Ede, welcome to the forums. Devi mat is a good option in that it sticks very well to the substrate. You really need to be putting down insulating backer board onto the floor first before the mat goes down otherwise you will be heating the concrete slab as well as your tiles and it will cost you a fortune! Once the mat is laid it would be best to skim the cables with self smoothing compound to give you a flat surface to tile onto. If the surface is not flat, mosaics will look awful.

As for adhesive, for floors you really need to be looking at powder stuff, and because it is a heated surface you need a flexible one too. BAL Single part Flexible or the rapid setting version will do the job as will Ardex X7R. There are others as well which other posters will give info on.

Good luck.

I am going to move your post to the New Members section.

Hi Ede, welcome to the forum..

As grumps above, my only difference would be adhesive, I'd use mapei spf...personal thing..Mark.

Hello GG and Devon,

thanks for the welcome and the advise on tiling.
It all sounds feasible.

If someone could recommend a good brand of selfsmothing compound that would be great. Do they do one ready mixed?

Thanks again in advance..

Ede

hi mate I think devi is a very good mat, I would suggest laying a thermal board over concrete to stop it adsorbing the heat and putting leveller over the mat prior to tiling x-plan etc. never used a ready mixed floor adhesive so can't comment.but BAL, ARDEX, do great flexi adhesive and grout, I personally only UFH to warm the the floor ambient heating and not a primery source but thats just personal choice
hope this is of some help

hello and welcome to the forums........

You can use a latex smoothing compound or you could even just skim over the cables with flexible adhesive......I use a latex leveller from ardex and it is called Arditex smoothing compound.......and i would deffo use insulation boards...will drastically reduce the running costs.....

could be tricky and end in a mess if its your 1st time putting under foor heating and tiling ontop with mosaic , put your mat down stuck to clean prepared floor screed over with flexi rapid set using top of wires as guide for screed let it set then tile on top with flexi rapid set.

Hello people and many thanks for your opinions..You are all very helpful..

juast wondering though..

Can you get the insulation boards locally at any tilers suppliers..?
I may go for a thin 6mm to help keep the height down..
Can the insulation boards go straight down over the concrete floor or are they best stuck down with some adhesive or tape or something to stop them moving over the concrete?

many thanks in advance folks..
