Ok been asking a few questions on her in recent days regarding a granite job, well just been to look at it.

Firstly the work will be paid for by an insurance claim.

The tiles are 600 x 600 21mm thick - I don't have a good enough cutter to do them, where could i hire one from?

Kitchen size is 20 sqm

Floor is half floorboards half concrete (extension) - what would be the best option to cover the floor with?

She wants a small black grout line. - Is it ok to have such a small grout line?

Adhesives - Should i be quoting at full street price as it is a insurance job or trade price?

So bearing all in mind:

Supplying and boarding out floor, supplying adhesives and grouts and obviously laying the granite what kind of price would you put forward?
She is happy with me to do the work, she just wants a quote that the insurance firm won't laugh at as it is too high.

A breakdown of what you would charge would be great (as in cost to board out etc etc)

Big step for me this getting granite experience so would love some of you who never get involved in saying prices to help me out on this.
Thx lads

I watch with interest penno mate. I have my first granite floor to do in a couple of weeks! Fortunately, I have a big mother of a Rubi wet cutter to help me.

Most bigger independent hire shops stock wet cutters, though if you get on with your local tile shop they may hire that one at a small cost - but they shouldn't really as its an electrical item - maybe invest in one with a view that you may come accross a need for it again in a similar situation

I'd treat them as two floors with an expansion gap personally.

3mm minimum else she might be needing that insurance firm again!

FULL price - it's your normal rate you'll want to be working with here - so if you give discount normally - think ethics and charge normally. You'll always feel better that way.

I'll leave the price for the other but I'd be thinking at least £30 a square meter plus material costs and time for prepping on a day rate.

The insurance should go with whatever the customer goes with. Usually it's a three quotes rule. So make sure you're in the middle of any others she's had.

Good luck.

hi mat....sorry don,t get involved in pricing as you know....

But wot i will say is make sure you put an expansion joint where the 2 substrates meet...A cold joint will suffice ( Silicon )......
As for the wet cutter CTD hire the rubi dw200/250 rail cutters out.....my local one does anyway..........

And insurance work needs to over priced slightly.......

I would price that at £2150 all in personally. I have been lucky enough to do 1 insurance quote before and I got £1200 for labour only, 1 bathroom and redo some tiles in second bathroom that another cowboy bathroom firm had done. It took them 13 days with 2 lads to do an ensuite and it was terrible! I spent 4 & 1/2 days doing that job.

I would allow myself at least a week to do your job to the highest standard!

Gonna put in the quote later, does this sound ok?

6 bags rapid white £53.99 6=£323.94
22 Sqm Hardi board £12.49 22= £274.78
20kg Black grout £24.99 2 = 49.98

Lay tiles £36 per sqm = £720

Remove old floor (very easy lino that just rips up) and lay Hardi boards £320

Grand total of £1688.70

To expensive ?

To cheap?

gaz how much is 12mm backerboard mate? trade and retail price?
----
Well quoted for everything including screws, primer and primer. Come to just under £2000.
The women said she has to produce 3 quotes of which she will be phoning the insurance company in the morning and insisting that i do the job. She has had two other people look at the job of which she found both from rated tradesman. Told me not a one of them spoke to her in detail about the job, no mention of sealing etc etc none of them even looked under the lino flooring to see what was underneath! One told her she can't have a black grout as it will stain and she is best to have no grout line atall. Both of their quotes were around a £1000 cheaper than mine which she has said is dodgy as she has done plenty of research and the figure she had in mind was about what i gave.
So fingers crossed!
