Having used this grout for the first time last night I'm not to sure how 'stiff/dry' the mix should be. I mixed a small amount to the above directions and ratio (1kg to 200mls water) as I'm not the fastest grouter and didn't want to waste a whole bag but the mix looked very dry ie lumpy

What consistancy should the mix have ie if left should it stay in a lump or should it start to slump and flow in the bucket?

TIA

As long as you put the recommended amount of water in and followed the instructions you should be spot on

I think I put about 210ml of water in for each kg when I did it - it was quite stiffish, but not lumpy. How are you mixing it? I bought a cheap paint whisk attachment for a fiver and used a cordless drill and it ended up smooth. If you have lumps, maybe you're not mixing it well enough??

Thanks for repling. I'm mixing with a cordless and one of those adhesive heliciol attachments. The mix is smooth untill I put the last bit of grout in (100g or so) then it started to clump. Even leaving it for 2 -3 mins and then mixing again didn't seem to smooth it out

From previous home grouting experience (stuff from B & Q) the mix seemed to flow more whereas this mix has the consistency of cold magerine which needed quite a bit of pushing to get into the grout lines.

I'll try the next lot tonight with a little more water and see how I get on :D

If i mix a 5kg bag i use 1.2 ltrs of water...perfect mix..;)
Dave , just recently grouted a 33m2 floor with ultra manhattan grey , i didnt measure the powder/water ratio but mixed it slighly slack , grouted the floor with 2 batches , then cleaned before it set with a washboy. went back 2 days later to collect money and noticed it had dried in shaded , customer didnt seem to notice and was happy but i was sweating bullets, got away with it this time but has put me off mapei , do you reckon not getting the mix exactly right is going to cause shading??

Are these the new or old ones Dave? I remember you posting something similar ages ago and these didn't match up with the instructions on my bag. At the time they were swapping from plastic to foil bags and the instructions changed (maybe even the formular). But can't remember if you posted this way after? Don't want people bringing up old instructions so just checking

These are seperate instructions to what is on the bag....

If you was off to early then you increase the chance of shading...and also over washing can cause shading as you are over wetting the grout before it is set..This is the same with all grouts and not just mapei...you must let a grout start to set before washing...washing off to early can bring polymers to the surface which makes the grout lighter...some mistake this for efflorescence...

Hope this helps...i and others use mapei grout and have no probs..
