I used to do the top first, then the sides (which help hold the top in situ) then the bottom, which keeps the joints all looking smooth. With a good adhesive I found no problems.
Most adhesives will work no problem if its properly troweled as it causes a vacume, its when you apply it to thick is when the adhesive peels away from itself resulting in the tiles falling off, best prop them up with a couple of battens an a lenght of wood, just to be on the safe side, especially if its above a sink or bath
i dont understand guys all the adhesives i use stick like sh*t to a blanket!!! one tip tho when tiling reveal always skim the back of tile for max grip!!
