How many use a laser measurer?

Just wondering how many tilers use a laser measurer to get measurements , instead of a tape measure. And if so which laser measurer do you recomend? They must be great for big rooms. I have seen some at £12.00 and some at £65.00. Would like a simple to use but accurate one.

Hi Keith, got myself a 12 quid one the other week, only 'accurate' to 10mm. Still trust my tape better. Even though this thing works out area for you I don't tell the customer because they don't understand why you add extra for cuts and waste!

Thanks faithealer.I suppose 10mm discrepency is ok for getting a quick area measurement, as I always add 10 to 12% for cuts/wastage.

Hi Keith a laser level is somthing i have never used but prob wil get round to it 1 day.

Have got a set of Stanley fatmax struggle to understand them on a gud day.

They are ok on big areas but for domestic work i wouldnt bother, just a gimmick really.

There are a few companies use these laser or even sonic measures..can be handy when measuring large floors / walls etc but don,t reckon they will be any faster to use on small area's......

there are a few models about ranging from as little as £15ish to £200 to £300 or more.......I,m afraid it's just thee old faithful tape measure for me....

but yes, i would have a laser measure for long distances, makes sense if your a one man band...

if anything they are better for small rooms that have obstacles because thats when you get discrepancies. when you have archi in the way and window returns then thats when a bulky level can be awkward..

the reason you pay more is because of 2 reasons..
1. the quality of the laser light
2. the accuracy over distance

you wont get much for under a £100-00p

i used to think they wernt worth while but having now used one then i would say they are a must. press one button and bingo a nice level line around the room or across the floor that you can follow in seconds.

the best 2 (most used by tradesman are..
dewalt dw087, been around for a few years now and excellent ..£140-00ish

pls180..they specifically specialise in laser levels. this is the brand new model that replaces the pls2..generates a 360 degree line around the room and very bright and small light and compact. £199-00p

pay you money, take your choice...laser levels are ideal for suspended ceiling, particions etc . if they were a gimmick then they wouldnt sell but theres no harm in the traditional ways if they work for your business.

Must admit I have one of these and must say they come in very handy especially when trying to measure areas that are constanly in use , for example the last big job I did was a secondary schools Gym and changing rooms in constant use and using the traditional method of the tape would have taken me for ever so I whipped out the laser measure and completed in half the time.

i would draw a line otherwise you will be constantly trying to tile while keeping out of the way of the laser.

Its the leica disto a2 that I use. Really quick for quotes, makes customers go 'oooh' but for setting out its all tapes and staffing out.

i use one and it is well worth the money. I use the Bosch DLE 50 Laser Distance Measure Indoor 50m Range it only takes a min to measure up and its dead accurate. I also use it when i'm measuring up to do my tiling. I brought mine over a year ago i guess there are better ones out now.
