Evening lads, i,ve read quite a few debates on here lately about this issue, i,ve got to be honest i,ve always used plywood overlays when tiling floors, i use 15mm marine ply which i screw through the floorboards into the joist and i,ve never had any problem or had to return to any job i,ve done. Now after reading on here about the poor quality of plywood going around i am thinking about changing to cement board, i already know the advantages it has, (better bonding, not the same issues with raising the floor height etc) my question to you is what thickness should i use and what is the minimum thickness i can get away with??? where i live we only really have a jewsons, are the cement boards from them ok?? thanks in advance for any replies!!!!

The only cement board I have personally used is hardi board which 6mm is the recommended thickness
Good product but I wouldn't rave about it.
Generally overpriced too I think

I've only used the hardie 6mm board but have tiled on alot of ply floors in small bathrooms and hav'nt had a kick back..the tiles were porcelain and ceramic, never natural stone though.

I use the No More Ply boards and 100% success, also tried Hardibacker but I have no local supplier.

I like your point about the quality of ply available these days, it is generally of a low quality.

Hi there...I always use hardibacker 250 (6mm) boards and have never had a problem. I get mine from tile suppliers CTD who have depots all around the UK...if I can get it in the far north of Bonnie Scotland then anyone can get it. I can't say the price here but if you open a trade account with them it works out a lot cheaper than your 15mm plywood. I get it at the moment in quantities of 50 sheets because of the trade deal they have going...have to order another 50 tomorrow!!

I prefer 10mm Marmox boards simply because they are a lot lighter and easier to work with. They are also so much easier to cut too.
