Continuing tiling above bath on new-build plasterboard walls....

Hi all,

We have just bought a new-build house, and whilst there is a shower cubicle in the en suite, the main bathroom just has a bath, not ideal for guests.

Above the bath there are currently 3 rows of Porcelanosa tiles (200x333mm) above the bath, finished at the top with tile trim. The walls above the tiles are plasterboard and the builders have put breathable white emulsion on them (even though I asked them not to!).

We would like the same tiles continued up to the ceiling, an area of approx 3100x1150mm (3.6m2) up to the ceiling and fit a shower screen/curtain so we can use this as the main shower for guests etc.

My questions are:

- Does the emulsion paint need to be sanded off first?
- Can the tile trip just be cut off, or do the top row of tiles need to come off?
- Do the walls need to be waterproofed/tanked before tiling?

Thanks,

Gareth

Paint- if you stick some strong sticky tape over the paint leave for 10min peel off and if the paint sticks to the tape it will need to come of - prime it with pva
If you can not get the trim out by knocking it with hammer and chisel more than likely the top row will rip the plaster board so it will be easer to cut the board out and replace it wher the 3 rows are ther will be a stud wall behind to screw new board to,

Try & remove the paint if you can, sometimes paint will not come off plasterboard.

"DO NOT USE PVA"

Use a designated tile primer, above is bad advice & I suggest you search this forum to see why you don't use PVA in a tiling environment.

I've extended a lot of tiling above a bath, if it's plastic trim then try & cut the back top edge with a Stanley knife, be careful though.
You could use a multi tool.
You could tank but then there will be no tanking on the 3 rows already fitted.
