Bathroom Tiling

Hi, hope you can give me some advice but we have been told by a tiler that our bathroom does not have waterproof plasterboard and we need to replace our plasterboard with it. I am concerned about this on the basis that we have walls and floor tiled and I would have thought this was sufficient.

Could you advise if we should have waterproof plasterboard installed.

normal plasterboard 12.5mm is fine, although in wet areas ie shower enclosures, tanking with either a membrane or paste is recommended.

as long as the plasterboard is solid i can't see a problem. I would totally recommend that you "tank" it though.

think your tiler means water resistant plasterboard (no such thing as waterproof plasterboard not strait of the shelf) as doug has saidyou are best to use a waterproof membrane or tanking kit

If its in poor condition then its not worth messing about with as the materials are cheap enough to replace. However there are differetn routes you can choose, you can choose for standard board and tank as already mentioned, or you could replace with a cement backer board like Aquapanel or Harddibacker, there are lots available.

As above, I always recommend waterproofing the substrate with a membrane/tanking kit. However there are plenty of people who don't do this and will continue to do so. Without it there is a risk of water ingression through grout lines/poor sealing damaging the substrate leading to the tiles falling off.
I wouldn't say it's necessary for you to rip out and start again, unless there are signs of water getting through to the plasterboard which will only get worse. Just bear in mind the advice given about tanking for future projects.

if its just a straightforward bathroom then i'd advise tanking as peace of mind with existing boards hope this helps

Hi and welcome. Either tank or replace with cement backer boards. If boards are in good condition just have it tanked. Tanking is a very simple process (but can be messy). good luck

Using plasterboard in bathrooms over here in Sweden is now forbidden, because of the paper on the plasterboard- so it's now water proof boards we use, and we also use the membrane/tanking kit..........
We have 2 Zones now- Zone1: is where the shower or bath is- and zone 2: is 1 meter out of Zone 1.
Membrane: should be used on the floor (the whole bathroom )
No Bathroom in Sweden will be insured, unless the bathroom has been done by a
registered tiling company, and they must follow the Swedish tiling rules.
Insurance companies were flooded with claims for damaged bathrooms, and the main cause was plasterboard in the bathrooms!
You have to really protect Zone 1: as this is were most of the water is, so try and use water proof board there & the membrane
