Are shower pan liners used in the UK? - Tile Advice

Hi everyone,

It's interesting to read all the posts here at this forum and to learn how things are done over in the UK. I was wondering if shower pan liners are used in the UK the same way we install them here in the US. This is the product I use, although in various parts of the US lead, copper, and hot-mop are used instead of PVC liners or CPE liners (like the one I use):

This sector is pretty new to the uk at the moment and is growing off the back of the less able sector. As a result shower tray formers are being used predominantly. The use of mud to produce a shower pan and include a liner isn't as yet a practice seen often.

The document is an interesting one and as time goes on if anyone was to require liners then wetdecs could supply them in kit form.

Hi Wetdec,

Specialty systems like Schluter Kerdi are catching on, but in my area I can only use the Kerdi shower system on non-permitted jobs. The local inspectors won't accept Kerdi drain and the entire system in lieu of our traditional pan liner approach. The thing that kills me is that the plumbers by and large do a sh*t job of installing pan liners, and the plumbing inspectors pass them without a second look.:mad2:

For most of the UK on normal household budgets for bathroom refurbs it has been a plastic or porcelain shower base - 'trays' used, not often a tiled one with the attendant specialist work involved. I have done a lot of custom ones, but it was quite rare and mostly on uppper budget jobs until recently with the introduction of preformed bases to tile to and the desireabiliy of a wet-room.
Cant tell you how many I get asked to look at after the fact, where the 'tile' work is a joke and the whole thing is only fit to be gutted and start again.
The types of shower pan liners and methods as you have in ANSI regs are known and used by older type tilers - me among them - here but would be a bit lost on the newer lot I think.
I'm forming one now as a matter of fact, too awkward a space for a pre-formed base so all custom formed work.

Are you aware of the Tuff2 shower tray former and that it can be cut to within 8inch of the drain port, this is an extremely strong piece of kit. If working to shapes then the Tilux tray former can be cut to any shape required. Toth of these without loss of strength.

I didnt - so many new products, about. I wasn't aware of it, thanks for the info, I'll look into it for future ref.
