Hi all,

My name is Karl, I'm 17 and an apprentice tiler from Dublin, Ireland and I'm looking for some advice on a buying a manual cutter please?

Long story short, my boss has gone out of business recently so I have no one to turn to for advice so I am hoping someone here can help me?

Some of my family and friends have said they will give me some work, to tide me over until I can find someone else to help me finish my apprecticeship.

The problem is I have very few tools and one of the family jobs is setting 10mm thick 600 x 300 porcelain tiles.

Good news is that I have managed to save up £200 to buy a cutter to start me off, the bad news is that that has to include postage to Dublin too.

So what I am asking is can someone please recomend a cutter that can handle these large tiles in this price range please?

I have been to a few local tool shops but all their cutters are either £40 or £400 and I get the feeling that they just see dollar signs when I walk in the door. There also not very willing to talk about the differences between models with an apprentice either so it's difficult for me to learn which ones are better suited to me?

I would be very, very gratful for any advice anyone could offer, many thanks in advance. Karl

Hi Karl, you don't have enough money to buy a new cutters but you could always get one from your local tool hire shop to tide you over for that job and then start saving for your own tools.

:welcome:Karl.

I'am sure that there will be a forum member from Dublin along in a minute.

Its like the buses - you just miss one and 35minutes later 2 arrive together.

Good luck and stick with it - you sound just right!

Timeless John.

good luck Karl, you sound like you know where you want to be. The rubi tx70 n is about 290 I think from trade tiler, any chance of asking anyone to 'sub' you. Pay them back the 'hire charge' each job perhaps.

Hi Karl
Get yourself on e-bay and see if you can get yourself a secondhand cutter. A good quality Rubi one, don't go for the cheepy £30 cutters. Thats the root I would take good luck mate hope it all works out for you

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies lads !
Never thought of a second hand cutter as was always told to buy new when on site. I Will drop Penno a PM to see if I something can be worked out.
Bit of a chicken and egg scenario for me right now so don't think I can get much more cash together, but will see if I can sell a leg or somehting in Ebay

Cheers for the advise lads, means a lot. It's been a bit of a struggle lately and a terrible time to be an apprentice, no one is taking anyone on and I'm no where near experienced enough to go out on my own.

Hi there Irishboy, check the buy and sell too,it cover all ireland and iv seen cutters in it before,i actually sold a sigma in it 2 years ago, bloody over 40 phone calls,
good luck anyway.

Sorry lads, just looked on ebay and found a Husqvarna TC670 for £180. It looks like it is spec'd ok and could do the job I need. Would this be an ok cutter for starting out?
