Hi,

I'm a fairly new to this and am just about to re-tile my bathroom. I've removed the existing tiles from one wall and I managed to take great chunks of wall aeay and had to re-plaster - those tiles were fixed well, so I'm leaving the tiles on the other walls in situ - I've read load of discussions about the merits or otherwise of tiling onto tiles - but these are set solid, so decision made. I've had to plaster the top 12" of the wall, as the new tiles are going to go to ceiling and the old ones didn't, and I've also plastered floor to ceiling about 2ft beside the old tiles )first time plastering - got it quite level too - yay! :hurray🙂
so now I've waffled, my questions:

1. Whats the best way to prep the plaster please?
2. I'm putting a 'border' horizontally round the wall, I thought at approx nid wall height. Is there a "standard" height for this to go?

Many thanks
Marion

so what about the extra weight that you'll be applying to the substrate Marion, do you not think they may now exceed the safe load bearing limits? Your new tiles may well adhere to the existing tiles, but will the existing tiles still adhere to the original plaster???

as regards the border height ,a good height for me is if the border sits on top of window sill . you may need to adjust it slightly ,just check make sure no silly cuts, dropping on bath , floor ,or ceiling, i would use a slow setting powdered adhesive, and has doug says you need to be carefull with the weight on the wall that is all ready tiled .if its a studded wall ,plaster board & skim ,weight limit is 20-22kg per m2

Thanks for the advice Doug and Rob. I'll check the weight/area ratio and see if I have to bite the bullet and remove the tiles. Border advice good thanks very much.
