2 week tiling course

Hi looking for a bit of advice do you think its worth while doing a two week tiling course?

hi douglas. what are you lookin to acheive from the 2 weeks, i think its worth while as its great to learn new things but depends on what your expectations are form 2 weeks?

Hi i was working with a tiler as a labourer and want to do the two weeks and start myself was wondering what use thought it was possible

Hi well i am looking to start myself i have work with a tiler as a labourer i no most things apart from setting out and was wonder if it was possible after the two weeks to go out on my own

You can call yourself a tiler with no training at all, that's the problem with the trade, it isn't regulated enough really, and some good tilers on this forum haven't had any training other than following an existing tiler. Which is probably the best way to do it other than college etc.

But if you do a short course to teach you the basics, get to know some suppliers and the tools etc while you're there, you'd have had more training than a lot of "tilers" out there!

We have a college coming on board soon in the midlands if that's any help?

I would like to do the two week course to get more experience and be more confident at tiling obv being a labourer u dont learn much cos metres means money lol

You'll earn more as a labourer than as a tiler for at least 12 months so make sure you can cover your overheads.

hi doug, if youve been labouring for a tiler for some time then thats a start, if your wanting to learn the trade why dont you ask the tiler to teach you ...show him your keen to do more than just labour would that be possible?

Hi i am not working with the tiler anymore he said he was going to teach me along the way but the work dryed up and he had to let me go thats when i started looking into these short courses

ok doug, well if its a course provider with a good reputation yes i would say its worthwhile to learn something but youll need to back it up with more than 2 weeks to go alone, can you do a bigger course? start with friends and family jobs?

i have looked into a lot of course providers trades training in edinburgh seem to have a very good reputation i am going to go down during the week to have a look and get a chat with the boys in there yea they have a four week and 6 week course there i thought if i did the two week course see how i feel then maybe take another two weeks if needed

How much did you learn whilst labouring?
Do you know the difference between adhesives and their applications? Did you mix up or just purely load out?
I'll be truely honest I'm a joiner by trade and I'll say collage didn't do a lot for me, actual working with someone who's experienced beats the classroom hands down, get yourself down to your local suppliers and start mingling with the staff, if you're a good lad someone will have you on board and the suppliers know everyone in the game especially the busy contractors as they'll be ordering mountains of gear
