Search the forum,
A tessellation or tiling is the covering of a surface, often a plane, using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellation can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries.
A periodic tiling has a repeating pattern. Some special kinds include regular tilings with regular polygonal tiles all of the same shape, and semiregular tilings with regular tiles of more than one shape and with every corner identically arranged. The patterns formed by periodic tilings can be categorized into 17 wallpaper groups. A tiling that lacks a repeating pattern is called "non-periodic". An aperiodic tiling uses a small set of tile shapes that cannot form a repeating pattern. A tessellation of space, also known as a space filling or honeycomb, can be defined in the geometry of higher dimensions.
A real physical tessellation is a tiling made of materials such as cemented ceramic squares or hexagons. Such tilings may be decorative patterns, or may have functions such as providing durable and water-resistant pavement, floor or wall coverings. Historically, tessellations were used in Ancient Rome and in Islamic art such as in the Moroccan architecture and decorative geometric tiling of the Alhambra palace. In the twentieth century, the work of M. C. Escher often made use of tessellations, both in ordinary Euclidean geometry and in hyperbolic geometry, for artistic effect. Tessellations are sometimes employed for decorative effect in quilting. Tessellations form a class of patterns in nature, for example in the arrays of hexagonal cells found in honeycombs.

Hi everyone.
I am new as you can palinly see, but not only new to the forum, I am also new to the whole DIY thing :). Anyways, I am trying to install ceramic tile in the bathroom floor. The job itself is not easy for someone like me, who has never done it before, but I seem to have a rather...
I know you can't tile painted walls, but what would be the best course of action?
Sand it back to plaster?
Key the surface?
Is there a treatment you can apply?
Or something else?
PS reason for question, my belt sander just broke!
PPS Would you use a bag of self mix adhesive if it's been...

Hi,
I posted the message below on the main forum a couple of weeks back. However I've had no replies. Over a hundred people have read the post, so there is clearly a lot of interest in this particular subject.
I then notice this part of the forum dealing with real stone, and thought I'd...

Hi there,
I'm new to the forum, and apologise if this question has already been asked.

A customer is thinking of installing 600 x 400 marble tiles along walls and floor in their wet room installation. Are these tiles likely to be solid marble? If so, is the only way to cut these with a wet cutter?
Finally, how long would you expect it taking to tile a rectangular wet room...

The job i'm on this week as a screeded floor with water fed ufh, which we are putting durabase down before tiling with 600x400mm pocelain. The point where the screeders finished one night and restarted again opened up to about 5 - 7mm. I said i think they will have to do an epoxy stitch, to...
Hello tile people
thankyou for reading

My wife would like to have white ceramic floor tiles fitted to our kitchen but I'm worried that the white grouting will get dirty and turn black.
Are there any products on the market that will prevent the grouting from staining, other than choosing black grouting which i've been told is a...

Got a bathroom wall to tile next week with bits of the old plaster coming off. Top skim in some parts and down to brickwork in others. The wall's not all that bad but what's the best way to prep before tiling with ceramic tiles 75 x 50mm?
Cheers.

Time and time again, I see advice offered to check for deflection before starting to tile on floorboards/plywood across joists.
What I don't understand is - how do you check for deflection and how much deflection is acceptable? Is there a gadget or a certain way of doing it? Do you jump up and...

Here’s some advice on cleaning and caring for your new ceramic tile flooring:
Sweeping
Dirt adheres easily to the surface of ceramic tile, especially styles with textured surfaces. Regular sweeping loosens and removes most dirt. A vacuum cleaner can also be used to sweep, but make sure you...
