porceline adhesive

Hi, new to forum and hoping some one can recommend a tubbed adhesive suitable for fixing 10cm x 10cm porceline tile to walls in a kitchen,any advice will be appreciated.

I prefer to use a cement based adhesive with porcelain but ardex do a tubbed adhesive which would be fine for small format tiles.....

A flexible, non-slip, water-resistant and frost-resistant wall and floor tile adhesive, especially suitable for fixing tiles, including fully vitirfied and porcelain tiles to low porosity backgrounds/bases. Suitable for use on concrete/brick/block walling, cement:sand rendering, plaster, plasterboard, cement sheets, tile backer boards, concrete bases, cement:sand screeds, plywood overlay, ceramic/quarry tile/terrazzo/hard natural stone, vinyl tiles/sheet bases, mastic asphalt. Conforms to BS EN 12004, Type C, Class 2T.


And don't forget to use a flexible grout........

you could also use ardex d20. its also suitable for porcelain

have you heard of granfix thay do a tub form porc its multifix self priming

Cheers for response,not been able to source any ardex but got some granfix paid £11.90 a tub does that seem about right told he'd give it me trade price.

sorry about the long post but this should explain why a cement based adhesive should be used for porcelain tiles.
Ready mixed ceramic wall tile adhesives require moisture to be lost from the adhesive in order to allow the polymer binder to dry and forma ‘FILM’ capable of bonding both to the substrate and the tile.
A High proportion of large format tiles, typically 30cm x 30cm or greater are typically porcelain and as such, by definition the tiles have a water absorption of 0.5% or less. Therefore this would slow down the hard formation between a ready mixed ceramic wall tile adhesives and a porcelain tile. If the background is also of a low porosity or is in fact impervious to moisture, the ability of the adhesive to “dry out” would be severely hampered, bearing in mind that the only rational escape route available to this moisture would be via the open grout joints. The larger the tile, the fewer the joints, thus reducing the amount of open areas where moisture may escape. For this reason, Building Adhesives Ltd would recommend the use of cementitious based adhesives as a general rule to ensure the adhesive is capable of drying and setting beneath the tiles.

I hate to say this but Bal Tas 2 is absolutely right.

You can't control the curing (drying out) with a tubbed adhesive like you can with a powdered product.

And preferably, use a cementitious adhesive that is flexible or has a "porcelain technology" added to make sure that it can bond correctly to a porcelain bodied tile 🙂

Yes my tiler warns about grouting too quickly.. Once the grout goes in the moisture can be trapped behind.

But I am not a tiler! - So I leave the adhesive advice to the experts..

But dont forget your diamond drills !
