my son ( 24yrs) is looking at different courses and we have spent ages searching all the different ones out there,, ranging from 3 days to 3 months and do not have a clue which way to turn.
some advice please from previous course trainees on who to talk to and who to aviod.
also would it make sense also completing a short course in plastering to compliment the tiling skills?????

I can, without any hesitation, recommend North East Tiling Training. It's a 4 day course (plus one extra day for the Natural Stone). 4 days may not sound like a lot, but Darren covers everything you could possibly imagine in these 4 days and when your course is finished you will have the knowledge, skills and business sense to begin tiling as a profession. Even when the course is finished, Darren is always available (either through email or telephone) to take your calls and give you advice if there is something you are not sure of. Just look at the rating for NETT in the courses forum, it speaks for itself!

As for the short plastering course, yes it can definitely come in handy as some of the walls you will be expected to tile will be in a right mess, so it is to your benefit if you can get them nice and flat before you begin tiling. Good preperation is probably more important than the actually tiling itself.

Best of luck on whatever you decide, let us know how you get on

PS NETT also provide you with a Nationally Recognised Qualification which can lead on to an NVQ at a later date!

thanks,
this is the one we had been thinking about after reading all the info on this site.
he is moving to spain to stay and has considered several '' trade '' courses but keeps coming back to tiling.
obviously a lot of the info will be different, i.e. business set up , tax etc and pricing will also be probably less but the skills and concept will be much the same.
would you advise to do the extra day at the same time? seems to make sense as long as its not going to be too much to take in at once!!
many thanks

NETT IS the one to go for i did that one back in march never looked back ,off back up in june for the one day Natural Stone).

Divcelt, where abouts in uk are you,as this may dictate which course to choose?Check out the Tiling courses forum as there is some excellent feedback on their.
I am with Varley on this one well organised ,fast paced, informative course which i cant find anything negative to say about except that Darren needs to be reminded about taking a break.Hope you find a course which is to your needs.

if hes moving to spain tiling might not be best trade as my mate lives there and he says the going rate is only about 6 euros a metre there as every man and his dog can tile there

ta,
local papers have adverts an advert stating rrom 25 euros a metre including a certain range of tiles, cement , grout etc.
and another stating 15 euros a metre plus tiles but including cement and grout etc.
baring in mind here tile adhesive is only about 3 - 4 euros for a 25 kilo bag and grout is petty cheap too.
if this was the case he should be loking at 12 - 13 euros a metre?
how does that sound?
how many metres a day should he expect to be able to do once up to sped?
I phoned a couple as a prospective customer and they both said 2 -3 weeks before they
could take on job.
any advice would be welcome.

actualy already in spain and will be flying over to uk for course and coming back to spain to work.
thats one reason the shorter course sounds better as it will cost a lot less by the time you count hotel, car hire , evening meals and flights etc.
he had considered a few different courses but seems keen on tiling and the overal cost to start up is not too bad compared to some trades plus he could start more or less right away dropping laflets and putting ads in local papers etc.
had thought of runing a few adds just to see response and if anyone phone he could just put them off for a few weeks by saying he was realy busy or something.
this might give him an idea regarding acceptable pricing levels and how much advertising for a response.
