am new to the business and am after so help, when i finally get the massive amounts of work at what stage to i get the money??
do you normally ask for some up front and if so how much %??
and is the balance on complettion of the job??

thanks in advance for the help

I don't ask for any monies until the job is complete and then I issue an invoice with 7 working days to pay, never failed to get paid.

I also accept credit cards with paypal, though I add a surcharge for this. Quite a lot of customers opt for this option.

Cheers,

Dave

and there was me thinking i might get some money up front to buy the ever expanding list of tools i need.:ninja:

tend to get paid upon completion. Only ask for monies if supplying tiles or v expensive materials.

Only give 7 days on commercial jobs.

I offer electronic transfer direct into my bank as well.

yes agree with the above i usually pay for materials and tiles if supplying up to around £500 which is usually the cut off point and request that the customer pays on completion.

If it is a job which requires a large number of tiles which the customer wishes for us to supply i usually say to the customer that the tiles r x amount with discount u can ring the shop up and pay over the phone or go in and we shall collect for u

shouldnt have to wait for domestic jobs to pay you, upon completion every time.
Yes u r right we shouldn't but we all work differently

For some one just starting out i would not recommend buying materials to a high value purely becuase if the customer is not happy then not only have u lost wages but material money till it is sorted.

Yes, for domestic jobs you should always be albe to expect payment on the day you finish and have packed all your gear back into the van.

For commercial jobs then it's normally within 28 days.

Commercial jobs can take up to 2 months...1 clear month which is standard practice. So if you invoice on 4 june, you may have to wait until end of July for money.
Domestic usually pay on completetion but they dont always. It really is up to you to tell them when you require paying. This is usually done by giving them a written quote and along the bottom of the quote in bold but not too large letters. PAYABLE ON COMPLETION.

Not sure if I've been too fair to my customers or just doing things differently, they certainly never rush to the cheque book when completed.
As for doing things differently do you guys price for everything in (materials & labour) this is what I do or give a labour price with materials separate?
And to further complicate; but hopefully of use to the original poster. Do you charge by m2 or day rate. I myself use a day rate.
Cheers,
Dave

Hello Dave how my partner usually does it is have a day rate for labour like urself and then a break down of materials for customer

Informing them of the final price not forgetting how much trade discount they recieved on the materials through ourselves.
