I have just had my kitchen floor tiled and the the upstands which are just a tile cut in half have been affixed to the wall but rest on the floor tile. Doesn't there have to be a gap and if so what should it be sealed with?

Secondly, the floor tiles are less than 2mm away from the walls, is this acceptable?

Any advice would be welcome.

A matching colour Silicon would be the option for the skirting tiles to floor joint and usually around a 5mm expansion gap between tile and wall or the skirting tile might not cover it.

what substrate is your floor smurfitt? is there any deflection, ufh or anything that is likely to cause any movement?

Sorry but I am a blonde female so not familiar with much tiling jargon. I'm guessing ufh refers to underfloor heating. No, I don't have that. the floor is concrete, was screed 5 yrs ago. Nice and flat, no divots or bumps and sealed with PVA four days before tiling began.
Just removed laminate flooring to have ceramic tiles but beginning to regret it as the workmen are making a right hash of it. After being advised that there should be an expansion gap I disputed their claims that there doesn't need to be a gap between floor tile and upstand. I was kindly given some info and printed a document which described the BS 5385 recommendations for internal corners. That seemed to frighten the hell out of them and they've decided to rip off all the upstands off and redo with 4mm gaps tomorrow. Since they've left, I've checked the floor thoroughly and apart from some gaps on floor tiles being 6mm with some being 3mm, (yes, they supposedly used spacers) I've found chipped tiles and they did not clean out the adhesive between tiles. I've been told that grouting over such will result in the grout cracking. Is this true and if so will they need to gouge out the adhesive beofre grouting?
In addition some tiles are less than 2mm from the wall. Is this acceptable?
I really appreciate any advice.

Sounds like a poorly executed job ! 6mm to 3mm joints????? sounds bad and the 2mm to walls gap is too little

Hi hillhead, thanks for response but could you give me a solution: ie what should be the minimum distance between wall and tile.
