Tiling Behind A Wall Mounted Wood Burner

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Evening all!

We are having a wood burner installed in our home which is slightly unusual and will be wall mounted. The plasterboard surrounding the wood burner will be removed and replaced with a rated fireboard.

We would like to tile behind the wood burner as i'm told a plaster finish will crack under the heat and we plan to have this tiled all the way to the ceiling and we are considering stone or slate veneer tiles. What are peoples thoughts on these veneer tiles and does anyone have any experience tiling behind a wood burner onto a fireboard? Do we need our tiler to use heat resistant tile adhesive and grout? Our tiler has done work for us before and he is excellent, but i always like to go into something with a little knowledge.

Below is the model wood burner we are fitting.

As above firstly,
if you are looking at the slate veneers which you stick on with contact adhesives ,the 2-3 mm veneers are backed /bound by resin and will have a flash point .as well as the glues and will need investigation into heat restrictions. Or are you talking about the ceramic backed stone veneered tiles?

The manufacture has said the majority of the heat will travel forwards but their will be reasonable heat levels near the side doors. I wan't aware their are different types of veneers but would want to use proper tiles fitted with tile adhesive.

Palace do a heat resistant adhesive you can pick it up from topps or their are plenty of others on the market.
Have you considered large format thin porcelain, they come in wide range of colours and patterns and as thin as 3.5mm so will add hardly anything to the wall. At over 3m x 1m they can look stunning.

Why not ask insurance providers guidance save ur self time and worry.lots things to things to think about other than tiles not staying adhere.
