Got a guy who has bought some Wickes SLC and has laid it over existing ceramic glazed tiles. The SLC has not adhered to the tiles and is lifting in sheets. There are 2 layers, down, of tiles and its on a concrete floor. I dont know what type of SLC whether it was a polymer enhanced one or not at the moment. I was going suggest a UBA/ Acrylic slurry coat over the existing tiles then then a fibre reinforced SLC. Any other suggestions?

Thanks. slc.jpg

The existing tiles need to be removed IMO..

The substrate looks dark, any idea what it is.? or is it maybe just a bitumen adhesive residue..?

The way it was done was wrong... so prep right and it will be much better...

Also for those that do SLC over substrates that are normally not straight forward to adhere to, then try Mapei eco-prim grip.. Broken Link Removed

Its the normal thing Dave. People want to do it QUICK but when it goes pear shaped they dump their problems on mr tile shop. They have SLC'd over existing tiles and it has come away. Ive just looked and they havent even cleaned the floor b4 they applied the SLC. Its in a hairdressers and theres hair stuck under the SLC! Tiles are firm. The black stuff is old terrazzo that they tiled on to 15 yrs ago. They want to SLC to lay rolled vinyl in the morning!IMG_0159.jpg

Mad innit...

Needs to be slurry coat then, and tiles cleaned first... or cleaned and a 2 part slc used..

Leave old terazzo tiles on floor, remove all tiles, clean the floor.
Apply mapei eco primer T with paint roller wait over night, put at least 3mm mapei latex plan than lay your vinly following day
PS: check old terazzo tiles after you have remove tiles if there is any movement on them you will need to remove them too

The Mapei sealer looks good so will get some for stock, hopefully that will do the job.

More pics of how not to DIY self leveller.

Now finished. Customer used the Mapei eco primer, recommended by Dave and he said was spot on (Like something to a blanket, were the words i think!) . Took a couple of finished shots. Not the best levelling skills by the guy but he was happy with it.

Nicely sorted. Eco Prim Grip is amazing stuff, really recommend it in situations like this with an awkward substrate.

Dont know price, told customer to buy it them selves as no one near me stocked it and carriage was silly. customer said they got about 40mts from a 5kg tub.

i pay £44.00 plus VAT at my local Mapei or a bit less from Lilley Tile and stone. I'd say on a perfectly flat floor such as a tiled floor, you'd get 30+m2 out of a 5litre, then less for a rough screeded floor, Mapei renovation screed loves going over this stuff!!

if you are going to slc over existing ceramic tiles then the surface needs 'roughing' up to give the slc something to bite onto aswell as the primer. a bit like the bonded, unbonded screed scenario. mechanical key and chemical bond.

Floor has to be clean too, problem here was that it was a hair dressers (hairspray residue etc not properly cleaned off) and they done a typical quick lazy no prep job. This eco prime suited the lazy man approach. It stuck like poop to a blanket and so did the slc afterwards.
