I have just picked up approx 80 sqm of 60 x 40 calibrated slate floor. I usually use Lithofin Slate Seal, but the customer has stated that he wants a "satin finish", and I am worried that the Lithofin may give a finish that is too shiney.

I will be sealing a few samples for the customer to assess the finish, but if he rejects the Lithofin, can anyone recommend other slate sealers that work really well and provide a decent satin finish please?

Thanks in advance,

Daz

Enrich N Seal is a penetrating sealer and will enhance & seal and thus give the slate a wet look. There are a few other choices that may suit the purpose from the Aqua Mix Range and be easier on the pocket however in the main they are topical sealers. The first alternative would be Seal & Finish Low Sheen which can be applied in coats and the more coats you apply the better the sheen the difference is it is a topical sealer and will eventually require some maintenance depending on the foot traffic.

Floor Shine & Hardener on the other hand is a low to medium gloss - more of a satin sheen really. More coats will increase the gloss slightly but it will never get too shiny.

It is also a topical coating sealer and as such will slightly enhance the colour of the stone, not darken it, but bring out some of the colours a little - in that resepect it could be described as a wet look (as opposed to looking dark due to being saturate with water. It will darken the stone initally (just as water does) but this will dry out to near the original shade, but with added highlights.

Seal & Finish is also more durable than High Gloss. However, as it is a coating sealer and not an impregnator, it is going to wear - all coatings do as they are in direct contact with the traffic, the sealer takes the wear before the stone. So, over time the sheen will appear to diminish, it is hard to give an exact time on how long it will last as this depends on so many things (amount and type of foot traffic, how often the floor is washed and what with), but it could be anything from 6 months in extreme situations up to 3 years. As the sealer dulls, you can top it up with an additional coat, without the need to strip it back first - just make sure the floor is clean and dry.

hope this helps and gives you few more options

LTP IRONWAX SEALER.

Used it just before crimbo............loverly stuff. No whiff. Cracking finish

LTP Ironwax Satin

A hard wearing ionised acrylic semi-gloss sealer, that provides an easy to apply self shine satin surface seal on quarry tiles, terracotta, brick, slate, stone, terrazzo, unpolished marble and cement floors. LTP Ironwax Satin may be used as a wax protector in conjuction with LTP Antique or Clear Beeswax. Maintain with LTP Floorshine.

Tips: Interior Use Only. On more porous surfaces pre-seal with LTP Ironwax Primer. Do not use in wet areas.

Thanks Tel,

Great info . However, my main concern is that it appears that the sealers are going to be on the "shiny" side and topical, so not my preference.

I appreciate the feedback and all further recommendations are really appreciated.

Cheers,

Daz

Iron wax is topical.....

Lithofin colour enchancer or ltp colour intensifier or enrich and seal for me....all impregnators..

I used a spray on sealer (aeorsol) just before xmas Darryl. Gave a very good finish and is invisible. Bit of whiff to it though (pear drops) and dries in about an hour. Called Universeal if I recall. I made a post about it previously after seeing a demo. PM me about costs mate. I used about 6 cans for 45m2 but you can buy it in gallon buckets and use a spray attachement which will prob be quicker for your area and a bit cheaper too I think.
