Silicone problem

At the back of the sink in our kitchen there is a white tiled wall, the tiles run along for a length of about 18 ft x 2ft high.
The bottom of the tiles has white Silicone running along them & in the area behind the sink the water has rotted & dirtied the Silicone, some of it has broken away. Some time ago we had the same problem & we got a Tiler to come in & redo it with fresh Silicone, but now its gone bad again.
I don't want to put this Silicone on it again as it doesn't last very long & its expensive getting it done by a Tiler, & so i am wondering if there is someone on here who can advise me on what to do.
I have been thinking about a narrow trim or something, if there is such a thing, that i could possibly fix to the bottom of these tiles ?, or any other proposal on how to deal with this.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hello John and welcome..

You need to remove all of the mouldy silicone before re-sealing or the mould will just grow back..

Silicone eater from any good DIY store will remove it..

but firstly what kind of work tops do you have and what brand of silicone was used before.?

Thanks Dave, the worktop is a greenish thick one, i don't know what make of Silicone was used
I am wondering if there is an alternative ?

Pop into b&q and get some silicone eater and remove all of the silicone and then when cleaned down renew

Use a silicone with anti-mould and suitable kitchens

I use mapei ultramastic shower was done 8yrs ago still no mould between 8 -10

mapei ultramastic does not go black, as Deano says mask it first. Sounds like cheap silcone was used. mapei is about a tennerish.

Thanks a lot, I will get this. I ahve the same problem with our shower. All around the bottom of the tiles where they meet the base is as black as soot, has been redone twice before by a Tiler, but it constantly looks dirty after a short time, would this Ultramastic be ok to put on that also ?

John, is your kitchen tap one of those mixer taps that swivel around? They can quite often leak. Do you think this could be part of the problem? If you are dead against silicone then how about bath trim? I saw some the other day in Focus Diy, but I'm sure B&Q and the other sheds have the same product. This trim is stuck to the wall tiles and the work top. However, the walls & worktop have to be really dry or else it won't stick. Failing that I have in the past used Homelux plastic trim & silicone behind a kitchen sink. This is because the worktop had partly rotted away. Good luck. Sean

any silicon used where water is present should use a sanitary silicon. screwfix give a varied choice about a tenner a tube.i use microban keeps mould free for years. there is a plastic moulding that clips on to a fixed rail it is expensive and crumbs etc still work under it.i would go for good sanitary silicon its cheaper and easier to maintain.best of luck

Thank you all so much, the grout between the tiles in the shower has also gone mouldy (from the bottom row of tiles up to the 4th row) Is there anything i can use to clean this, or should i regrout them.

Thank you Sean, yes the taps are the mixer type, they don't leak but they spatter water constantly onto the area behind the sink.
That stick on trim sounds like it might be a good idea, i will think it over.
I have a problem with the grout going mouldy between the lower rows of tiles in the shower, any ideas on that ?

you can use bleach with a scrubbing brush as long as your tiles arnt painted .bleach will take colour out. if a major clean doesnt work regrout. its a slow job but if you take your time it will look like new stick on your ipod and switch off from boredom.

yeah can use in shower, the bal microban is good to, think the mapei has more colours not sure though.

citric acid or bicarbonate of soda is good for cleaning white grout, dont like using bleach on glazed tiles.

dont use bleach raw on tiles,it may make your white grout yelow
