I do alot of tiling for a builder, and when i do his floors the skirting is always on, i always Silicon around the edge where tiles butt up to skirting, does everybody do this because he tells me to just grout up to it. but i really hate seeing cracked grout around edges when it dries out, even if i use a flexi grout, againt wood. I always use the same colur Silicon as the grout im using!!! I think im doing it the right way.

Hi enduro

I'm with you on this one i always Silicon around skirting boards and door frames and any wooden surround due to the movement, nothing worse than seeing cracked grout and once it starts cracking it spreads.

Chunky munky

Wood is classed as a movement joint as it will expand and contract with temperatures, allways Silicon to avoid grouts cracking, same applies when tiling upto a door frame, Skirts are best taken off if possible then put back on after tiles

It all depends what he is paying for. If your working to a tight budget, then don't Silicon. But if the customer is willing to pay the extra £20 for the Silicon and application, then go for it.

It is the right way to do it if you can't put the skirts back on top of the tiles 🙂
