So I've got a bit sick of self leveling crap floors so I've just spent a good few quid on a load of refina screed edges and a polly float a new 4"x14" steel trowel and some kinda like snow shoes and I've told my mate the builder I'm gonna be doing the next floor and he was pretty happy as his lads hate doin it do any of u guys ever get down and dirty with the ole sand and cement dry pack ?

Kyle you'll regret that decision pretty quickly I'd say. It's a different ball game mate and you need a well drilled squad with very good tipped screed for a succesfull outcome and one that is in time.
Many moons ago I had to do it and over the years it's become less and less that I do do it.
Each to their own I say.
Horses for courses.

900x600x20mm stone on sand/cement screed - just last month. Thoroughly enjoyed creating the levels and falls required. Mind you the next 900x600x20mm fixed with adhesive went down quicker.

I'm getting a labourer for the day and I'm getting a very good days pay and to be honest it's one of them things I've always wanted to have a go so I'd of done it for free just for the experience
Spend your time setting your rails, if they are spot on then pulling off them is easy and you will get a good finish, make sure you get a good consistent mix

few times I do screed. (Straight and straight they do cost more)
when it happens, I do discount on the installation of tiles.
Because I know already, that it makes me more tile laying.

in any case, do screeds it is tiring, but worth it.
