Hi
I am new to this type of thing. I was reading with interest comments on SBR. I and thought I would let you know what I found out. I started to buy cheaper SBR but had problems. Spoke to a Tekky guy and he told me about density of SBR that some SBR's are watered down and do not do the job properly. No advertising allowed

:welcome:Welcome to the Forum,
Truth sometimes hurts, but its all ways the best policy in the Tilers Forum. With over 20000 ears and eyes in the forum all comes clear in the end.

i cant say ive noticed any diff in SBR, than i only use it to bond sand/cement screeds

SBR is usually a water borne polymer although some primers are solvent borne. It depends on the concentration of the SBR as to how good the primer will be i.e. the amount of polymer in the mix. It stands to reason that cheaper SBR compounds will not have as much polymer in them so will not perform as well. In other words pedalbox and I apologise if I am being a bit blunt but well done for stating the obvious.

I personally don't like SBR over anhydrite because I don't like the risk associated with a water soluble system, although I have seen it work succesfully. Over cement based screeds and concrete it works excellently.

Bal, Dunlop and Sovereign do some excellent SBR primers.

SBR is no good on anhydrite IMHO...needs to be an acrylic primer and not synthetic...

even better if you can stretch to epoxy primer.

I would only go with acrylic if using gypsum compatible adhesive. If cement adhesive I always recomend water dispersed epoxy....I know.....the manufacturers say acrylic....Who am I to question their technical expertise. I just follow my instincts based on experience and knowledge of the chemistry and hydrodynamic interactions between primers, screeds and adhesives. :yikes:

That said I have seen acrylics used succesfully. I beleive the key is that as long as the screed is very dry and you apply several coats (I don't think 2 is enough) then it will work. I see too many issues with acrylics though to feel comfortable with them under cement addy.

You know my views on gypsum based adhesives cos I have posted them often enough. Just to recap for those who have not seen my posts on this topic. With anhydrite (which turns to gypsum) use gypsum.
