Quote sheet. How to look presentable

If you want to do it "by the book" (according to me), you specify what you're quoting for, what your labour cost is for the job, how much the materials you supply are going to cost, AND certain terms of service.

By "what you're quoting for", I mean, for example:


  • Removal of 20m2 existing tiles
  • Fixing X m2 20x30cm ceramic tiles to walls
  • Fixing X m2 30x30cm porcelain tiles to floor
  • Grouting of walls with x coloured grout
  • Grouting of floor with x coloured grout
  • Sealing corner joints and surface transfers with Silicon
And so on... Note the emphasis.

What I mean by "certain terms of service" is for example:


  • This quote is equal to a contract between the tiler and the customer, and is to be viewed as means for peace of mind for both parties.
  • Anything not specified in the quote is not covered, and may incur extra labour and material costs
  • Removal of existing tiles does not include replacing or repairing already present damage, or damge incurred by the removal of tiles, unless specified in the quote. [safety in case the customer is too cheap to let you replace old n ****ty substrates which is in god knows what state of decay]
  • The quote is valid for the meterage, tiles, and conditions, specified in the quote. Switching tiles, increasing meterage, or changing conditions may incur extra labour and material costs. ["But you saaaid you'd do this and that and whatnot!!!1", where upon you hold the quote with his signature to his face]
  • The stated materials cost covers the specified work
  • Once the start date of the contract is negotiated, if either part wants to change the date, the other part may void it. [Safety for customers in case of no-show tilers on rush jobs]
  • Once the start date of the contract is negotiated, if the customer wishes to change it, or cancel the contract, it shall be done atleast 14 days prior, or the tiler may charge day rates for unfilled work days [for customers who come to you screaming "I need it done now!!!" and you agree, and reschedule everything, only to have the customer calling the day before the job and say they changed their mind]
  • The tiler is not responsible for the quality of any materials, including tiles, he/she has not supplied him/herself [in case of crap tiles]
Etc etc...
 
i use an invoice template, very simple. Name address etc few columns total at the bottom. i print out half a dozen blank ones at a time with "QUOTE" written in place of "INVOICE" and carry them in my folder with letter heads.

cover your back and use "Estimate" as opposed to quote..Mark.
 
I take a crib sheet with me to every quote, this covers everything from the tile size down to the quantity of trim required. I keep all of these in a folder and when someone calls me back i can refer to it. I also use this sheet to calculate my price (estimated of course) This also helps to make sure i haven't forgotten anything!

Never EVER give the customer a copy of your crib sheet as the next tiler will walk in, take £50 off the price and get the job without even getting the tape out! My estimates stipulate the works to be carried out (removal of existing tiles etc and the sq m of tiling) The invoice will accurately detail all works carried out including repairs, fitting of soap dish and anything else you did.

for most private jobs a verbal quote will be fine but if your working for builder a written quote is sometimes needed it also covers you so exactly wot you quote for is outlined. just use company name address phone no ,mob no. fax and e-mail if you have one.:yes:

Sound like a good idea, would be handy to remind you what the job was if the customer rings up a few months down the line
