Here are a few photos to show how we install this crack isolation membrane made by The Noble Company. It can also be made into a waterproof installation by overlapping and sealing the seams. This sheet membrane can be used on floors and walls. We used Noble's glue to install the sheet, although latex modified thinset can be used, as well. I haven't noticed anyone mentioning this product being sold in the UK, so I thought some might be interested in seeing a product used in North America.

This sheet is 30 mils thick (0.030 inch thick), or about 1/32". It is a shade under 1 mm thick for my metric-using friends. 🙂

The final picture shows the membrane installed and rolled with the 100 lb vinyl roller. Tile can be set immediately, but we prefer to give it a day for the glue to set up underneath the mat. We usually use plywood or drywall on top of the mat to spread out our weight while the glue is fresh. This keeps the mat from getting distorted while we walk on it.

I don't like the sound of a membrane that has cracks in it:smilewinkgrin:

Did you do 2 pours of SLC?

Rob, yes on this one we did two pours. I think it was 15 bags total.

Cool, I looked at the third picture and I could see it wasn't on top of the chicken wire, so wondered if it was SLC or something else:thumbsup:

What are the dark (pencil?) lines on the membrane where they over lap? is it just a guide line on how much it should be overlapped? when used as a waterproofer

Rob, those marks were ones that put on there with a marker, for alignment of the sheets. Noble makes another sheet membrane called TS, and it has an edge on the sheet that is made for the overlaps for waterproof installation. They have a different product to use for seaming the sheets.
