Hi there,

I'm an engineer in Dublin, with a very keen interest for tools work. Haven't done too much tiling before (mostly repair), but I'm starting with a very small cloakroom bathroom this week.

My house was built terribly during the 'boom' - I am concerned about the thickness of the skim over plasterboard walls. I asked for 'light' tiles, but still concerned. Should I plywood the walls over existing plasterboard & skim?

Using 250 x 400 x 5 mm matt white ceramic tiles - was initially just going to remove paint, sand and prime with acrylic primer.

Thanks & hello again,
Dave

Hi MrRush and welcome to tilersforums.com!

:welcome:to the forum

firstly i would get a weight for you tiles,20kgm2 is about the maximum weight for platered walls, thats inclusive of about 5kgm2 adhesive and grout so it leaves about 15kg per m2,if you find that the tiling is going to be too heavy then i would suggest sheeting with plasterboard is your quickest and cheapest option

Thanks for the welcome all and thanks in particular for the advice David.
With the 5mm depth and assurance that these are indeed quite light tiles, I'm hoping I'll come in just under the 20kg/m2. My room is very small (about 1.6 m2), so every mm counts!

Thanks again,
Dave

'Tis a very friendly site this - thanks guys. Yep, not really Mr. Rush by nature, so I'd probably starve if I was out in the field working for myself (which I tell myself I'd prefer) rather than in an office. Five or six careful jobs a year is usually my limit

Cheers,
Dave

Hello and :welcome: have you considered backer-board? plenty on the market, or is that meerkat:lol:
