Hi, my name is Cameron, I'm 24 and I have just started tiling for a bloke round the corner from me.

I am a member of Migweb, Muscletalk, CorsaSport, and various others.

I find it very useful to have help on hand when I'm in need and also to give help should I be able to.

I can't wait to get stuck into jobs and ask you lot to help me out with different problems. The bloke I work for cuts so many corners and is not out to please the customer. I am, I have been brought up this way and I am a complete perfectionist so if it takes me that extra hour to silly up or anything else, I will.
I will be learning what he can teach me but I will be asking another local tiler to take me on as he is also really difficult to work with. (He drinks heavily every night)

Hello and welcome. I feel for you. Really sucks working with someone who doesn't want to do a proper job, and it sucks even more when he or she has some sort of addiction and/or deep character flaw(s). For you, as a learner, it means you have to be more observant, and think ahead of things more than usual. Read manuals, watch videos, speak with others in the trade. Atleast you'll be better prepared to distinguish good from not so good then. Good luck, and do ask if there is something you want to know. There's lots of experience gathered on these forums.

Yupp, I made a post like that a few days ago. Glad you found it informative. I find that many craftsmen just try to "feel" a good price, instead of actually doing the maths, and getting it right. It annoys the hell out of me 🙂

The bloke I'm working with has such a shake on he can't Silicon the baths or sinks. He didnt know to use a squirt of watered down fairy up liquid to smooth it out. Nor a nectar card to scrape up excess from tiles.

I've only been at it a week (plus a mates floor from a while ago) and I can do a better job that him. It may take me longer but so funk!

I've already started to buy tools and will be going to NETT soon so hopefully Princes Trust here I come !

Nectar card? Never tried one of those myself, I use one of these:

It a small piece of plastic, dunno where I got it. Adjustable width and bevel on the Silicon 🙂 Takes five minutes to do an entire bathroom with one of those 🙂

That's what I will do when I go solo 🙂 The former, using a spreadsheet or something, not guessing...

welcome to the forum....you have your work cut out if your "boss" has, should we say a "variable" tolerance threshold!

BTW, I dont use a spreadsheet for pricing, and i don't use the "feel" factor (tried and lost money!) - Invested in a copy of Sage Accounting - it gives me the ability to quote etc., and lets me enter all purchase notes and convert quotes to invoices, o bank rec's and everything - saves a fortune in accountancy fees come year end too - also then creates a customer database for "marketing" too!
