My 5yr old Makita 18v cordless drill chuck seized up last week. I love Makita so I'm sticking with it but undecided whether I should bite the bullet and get a new bhp458 lithium or stick with the ni-cd setup and just buy a new body.

Any thoughts?

I've recently upgraded my drills from nicad to lithium (dewalt), and the difference is quite something. Spend a bit more and definitely get the lithium.

I'm looking at this....... Makita DK18000 18V LXT Twin Pack. BHP458 Drill BTD146 Impact Driver 2x BL1830

Looks awesome!

That looks the business, I got a similar dewalt set from screwfix on offer from £299-£199 not as powerful as those though.

If I was buying new tools from Makita then I would be opting for the new Brushless models.

Brushless are about £450 so suppose it depends how much you need them. The dk1800 set are the old model, better getting the dlx2005 for the extra £50

These are in the ITS catalogue.

It's the Makita batteries that are worth having. The drills never seem to last that long for me (couple of years - usually) so I just buy a new drill body from ebay every now and then for around £80. Defo go with the lithium option and then it's easy to add other tools to the selection in the future.
