Long wait before can apply slate sealer?

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi - first time post so please forgive any mistakes.

We had a tiler lay a riven slate floor for us yesterday. It's all been cleaned and looks great ready for the sealer we have bought which is Lithofin Slate Seal.

However I was reading on the tin that for newly laid floors on average you should wait 8 weeks for the floor to dry out before applying the sealer. I then looked further on the web and found the tech sheet which doesn't mention the 8 weeks but does say that any moisture coming up through the slate could make the sealer turn white.

Is the concern that the tile adhesive would need to dry out 'through' the slate before the sealer could be applied? Or perhaps the issue is referring to new concrete floors that need to dry out properly first? Our tiles were laid on an old concrete floor that's been down for years so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm just keen to get the job finished so would rather not wait 8 weeks. But obviously I don't want to screw it up and have white patches all over the sealer.

Any help much appreciated. I'll contact Lithofin on Monday if no obvious answers here.

Thanks

If moisture is still present then yes it can bloom the topical sealer...

Are you after that shiny look ?.. because that is what slate seal will leave.... i actually prefer a colour enhancer on slate and that allows the slate to breathe ..
