lino tiles, tile over or remove?

Hi all,

Looked at a job yesterday and it was half screed and half old lino tiles which are stuck like a guddun. I told the customer it would be best to remove them but he seemed ok that I tiled over them.
Has anyone ever tiled over them or is it not advisable??
If so do you apply a bonding agent?

As long as vinys or well adhered, prime with bal bond and away you go..

As Dave says, as long as the lino tiles are stuck down solid then no problems tiling over them.

get them up theres no way they are a suitable background for tiling as they are only stuck to substrate with contact adhesive or bitcumen what happens when customer drags washing machine ,fridge over your tiles and they come up because of vinyl tiles are coming loose
you can contact bal,granfix,ardex,and any other adhesive manufacturer and they will tell you the same get them up

when you get time visit bal site and read their spec manual and you will see that it is OK as long as vinyls are "well adhered" to substrate and they are primed before tiling..
YES vinyl tiles can be tiled over.............

I endorse Daves comments,always prime and use flexible adh if possible. any expansion or contraction although limited won't then effect the integrity of the bond

I agree with gaz and dave but if you feel better lifting them then use a heat gun to soften the glue and you will be surprised how easy they come off. I recently lifted about 70m2 in a sainsburys warehouse and this method took no time at all compared to the initial attempt at chipping away at them. Cant take the credit for this tip though, Dan passed that one on!

Yes they will because they don't know how well stuck they are.This is only a descision you can make.............IF IN DOUBT, RIP 'EM OUT !!:wink_smile:

the way they explained it was if its a sunny room and the floor gets hot off the sunlight the glue they are stuck down with will become soft and more chance of tile failure

Makes perfect sense to me,but I have spent a lot of time fixing amtico(vinyl)in conservatoties and you have to put them down with epoxy resin adhesive,otherwise the're up.Any tile fixed with epoxy adhesive is well lets say permanent!
