I went to price a bathroom today for a small builder I do work for now and again

He's boarded two shower walls in what looks like sheathing ply and then covered them in schluter kerdi matting with the schluter kerdi keba rolls in the joints so it's fully water proof
But I still think this is a bad idea because of the ply.
Just wondering what others think of this

I don't like fixing on ply I repaired a job 2 weeks ago with exactly the specification you are describing

It's not my ideal set up but, still nothing wrong with it. I'd happily tile to it providing the waterproofing is done correctly over the ply.

The matting will effectively stop moisture entering/leaving the front face of the ply but I bet that the edges and rear face of the ply have not been treated with anything so that any changes in the atmospheric moisture content on the rear of the boards will cause the boards to twist which in turn will effect the tiles. That's just my opinion but I think it is worth calling the Schluter tech help to ask their opinion.

Cheers guys, I'm going to email schluter for peace of mind. I know his joiners primed the boards and the edges. I've had them do that on previous jobs. Just never tiled on sheathing ply only marine ply. and not in a wet area

wouldnt touch it if i havent fixed the kirdi your leaving your self open if the matting fails on the ply

to me you might be better off covering ply with HBB then tanking over then you knowyour fixing to a sound surface

if you think its a bad idea ,tell him it is and then give him one that you would be happy with, if he doesn't want to change it ,tell him you cant guarantee it
