A while ago I was asked if I could tile a newly fitted bathroom for a friend of the missus. I was quite happy to give them a quote at mates rates, but I didn't hear anything from them until yesterday. The missus told me that they had had the bathroom tiled by a tiler that the plasterer recommended. He was fully qualified and experienced according to the plasterer. The customer wanted to know if tiles should be put up using 4 or 5 blobs of adhesive because she didn't think it looked right.
I told her that it wasn't the best way to fix tiles because of voids behind the tiles, tiles not fully gripped to the wall, water ingress etc. Should I recommend that she gets them refixed, tell her that it'll do or just nod smuggly cos I think I would have done a much better job probably cheaper.
Or am I in danger of disappearing up me own backside?

i wudn't even bother wasting my breath really wudn't wud put my head so far up my own bum lol

While dot and dabbing tiles is not the correct way of doing things, I have seen may a bathroom that has been tiled with dot and dab and they have been there for over 20 years.

I'd still tell the wife that only cowboys do that sort of thing, which really it is what it is, and wether they stay on the walls long term, they will just have to wait and see.

If there is a propper method of tile fixing where you cover the entire wall in adhesive, then people only dot and dab, then it is cutting corners to keep it on the cheap.

i'd tell her, explain the issues and tell her to make sure shes got the blokes number in case. put the willys up her. doesnt really serve a purpose at this point, however it might mean next time she asks you to do it properly and a little flapping serves her right for getting you round to quote and then trying to save £50 with someone who cuts corners!!! :ninja: honestly, i am in no way bitter or twisted, lol, well maybe a few twists.

just heard back from the non customer............ the experianced qualified tiler fixed 12 by 10 tiles using 5 blobs of what sounds like grip fill or no nails!!!
As fekin said tiles held up with dot dabs of tile adhesive could stay up for twenty years but somat that came out of a tube? can you get decent addy in a mastic type tube? Did I mention that the customer did provide addy? The most expensive that topps could provide? which the tiler ignored! Startin to feel less guilty about grassing up an absolute cowboy. I'm new to the trade and I wouldn't even dream of doin this. Not even this late on a friday nite after a bottle or two of wine.
I've got me rant owt the way I'm off to try an bounce the misus. wish me luck.

Nah, I'd say it needs doing again now, or wait for the tiles to start falling off on your head.
I wouldn't really charge any different for doing the job, obviously I would if I was to remove the tiles and make good the walls again.
