i know ive only just set up on my own but one day id love to run a tiling firm and take on tilers its a dream of mine which hopefully one day i would like to achieve

Is there anyone else who would also like to run a firm of there own in the future

In a word.........."No"

I have thought about taking a young-en on more than once............but the thought of hanging over them watching/teaching..........only for them to collect all your experience.......and then naff off and set themselves up:furious3:

As for taking on experienced tilers..........you obviously have to have the work coming in, and to know that they can tile to your expectations..........iffy

just an idea lads i would take apprentices on if they were anything like what i was no way plus at 16 most of them are thick as pig sh*t id only take on tilers how i know to start with

I have 4 boys,i'm sure they would like to get in on the act, trouble is the lazy buggers can't even get out of bed...

four boys den i take my hat off to you you ll have your own family business there in a few years

NO.Never again.
Used to have 28 fixers many years ago.
Thats 28 people taking the odd bucket of adhesive for their own jobs, 28 people taking grout trims spacers rtc.
28 people with every excuse under the sun as to why they cant get to work today or why they havent finished or why the just had to go to the pub at lunch time.
NO never again, i am much better off working for myself and working alone. If something goes wrong then there is only me to blame.

Bet your xmas works do, is a riot....lol

My long term goal is to learn plastering to a good degree and also basic plumbing for bathroom fitting so I can offer the whole bathroom refurb business, and most probably my part P too at some point maybe.
Then take on an apprentice or two, teach him\her to tile and fit bathrooms and plastering so when things got very busy I could drop them off at one job while I did another, or just get the one job done very quickly.

Or a shorter term goal, get a partner who can plaster and fit bathrooms then that way everything could be split 50-50 in terms of van\advertising and risk etc etc.

I have tried taking people on but I found that I could do more without them around, and so I was earning less as doing jobs slower plus paying their wages! Also I work longer hours than anyone who you would employ and so this is also a problem!

My goal is to be a good all round tiler with lots of work and i would love to set up a business to sell tools, in my own shop and on my own website, there are a few out there but am sure there is roo for one ore. i would like to set up some contact to sell small and work from there. things like tile cutter and snippers will fly of the shelves

Quite happy being a one man band that works with other independant tilers as and when suits.
More people = more problems and doesnt always mean more money!

Hello LM Ceramics. Your intention and Sir Ramic´s reaction is nearly the same what is going on on the german market. Only less companies have 10 or more employees, and if so, they mostly work on very big objects like e.g. airports.

The typical tiling company here has 4-6 employees. With 4 only the company owner works active too ~ 50%, rest of the time is for quoting, driving stuff to the sites and other activities. Important is, that you rely on one of your workers and make him confident on what YOU do to let him replace you if you are ill or on holidays. Good luck for your big business, Martin:8:
