Closing cuts

I've always been of the opinion that closing cuts are a big no no, until recently I decided to put them into jobs to help with the layout and I'm now wondering why I've been against them for so long! This is my current job, it eliminates that extra grout line to the side of the door and I don't think it's even noticeable.

Done in the right circumstances I think they're fine Bri, I did one once above a doorway and the tiles were a sandstone effect so I cut a closer then also ran in some dummy diagonal cuts using wet cutter to make it look like a keystone. Customer loved it 🙂

Totally agree Doug, both times I've done it recently have been with 90x31cm tiles. Sometimes what seems wrong is actually the best solution aesthetically.

Love the curved cut! Makes me feel like I'm in a spaceship 😀 Not sure why. haha

Thanks Bri, thats what I thought it was, only possible with natural stone? Also what method did you use to cut that curve if you dont mind me asking?

The photo doesn't actually show the effect of the closure as the original size tile is not shown!
However it is acceptable to use cut down sizes which enhance the look and not just pieces because it's easier.

You're right John, it's not the best example! There were only 4 whole tiles in the room so it's even less noticeable.

In this case, just a handful of measurements and then a final scribe. More often than not, I template cuts like this out of card or thick lining paper, much easier and quicker.

Done it a few times before myself and to me it's what pleases the eye. To me the less grout lines the better and if you can eliminate them without it looking obvious then that is the route to go. I did one a while ago to eliminate 30mm cut either side of a window on 60cm tiles and the customer never even noticed.

Did you nibble it or use a machine?

Shortening a tile for one reason or another. In this case, to fit above the door. The tile is a 90cm tile reduced to 70cm to lose a vertical grout line.

Was looking for a photo of one I did last year, exact same circumstance, are these Porcelanosa Bri?
I cut it in the Sigma & polished up the edge with a machine & you couldn't notice.
Still don't think customers noticed.
Here's one on the job I'm on just now, done by a local firm,
How not to do it.

There's a lot of nice 3D tiles appearing, like those ones, top job.
Done these end of last year.

It's good fitting Porcelanosa tiles. [emoji106]

When doing a closing cut is there a technique for getting a slight bevel to the edge?

Just got a full bathroom confirmed with Porcelanosa tiles, one feature wall with the 3d wave effect, looking forward to it

You will never get a true factory edge on a cut tile but you can get it close, the tile I refer to is ceramic & I got it almost perfect.

Not good enough Stef, it has to be perfect :sofahide:

That's well nice Bri, brings the effect right out, normally hate downlighters as even the tiniest of lips can show.

This is something I've personally always done , when the circumstances are correct ! Do you always finish around your bathroom doors with trims instead of architrave ? Tidy cutting round the ceiling their

Trim was home owners choice, I personally don't like it as much as architrave.
