got a small floor to tile (2 m2) in a new build house with big sheets of chip board as the floor, i was going to tile straigt to that with rapid set flexible adhesive or would it be advisable to put ply down as well???

As its only a small floor i would use No More Ply or Hardibacker with Bal Fast flex or similar and Flexi grout.

For such a small amount the cost wont be great and its easy to use. As long as floor is solid its fine, its no substitute for springy floors

Hello Burncross Hardi Backer is available only from Topps in sheffield ie shoreham st one or meadowhall one.

The last time i got it with trade discount going back a few months now was £9.70.for the 6mm board 1200x 1200 i think and the

12mm one which u need was £10.38 again 1200x1200

Not the cheapest to use but for a small area like that very good.

Easy to install and cuts bit like plasterboard i got a hardi backer knife only £6 also was from topps all the best.

Easier to go into Arnold Levers and get 12mm ply alot cheaper

ONLY tip do not buy thier screws as they r a rip off

All the best Raja

personally i would ply it out with 12mm ply screwed in a grid type fashion at 300mm intervals ,then prime ply before tiling......use 1 inch screws this should avoid any leaks.

To be honest Brian i would as well but incases where it is a small bathroom or if the customer wishes to spend the money on fine materials i would use hardi backer

BUT

If the customer just wanted the tiles down and cheapest quote would use ply as it is just as good if layed properly.

Only thing i like about Hardi Backer is very very easy to cut and hardly makes much difference in price if a job is upto say 5sq mtres.

What is the consensus when using hardibacker / ply etc - and the customer says the floor height will be raised too much between room and whatever the door opens too? Plus who cuts the door down? I have done it once for an elderly couple, but wouldnt want to do it everytime

Has anyone ever used Bal Fastflex onto chipboard in a v small, rigid, sturdy floor area and not plyed over?Know you should really board over but wondered if it works OK?

Yes many times and never a problem, as long as you mix correctly and use flexi grout and the Silicon the edges you will be fine. Once laid, leave the tiles to dry fully and then grout.
