Hi all

Just starting out and am trying to think of a good business name so i can get my advertising sorted.

Wondered if some of you would mind giving your opinions on if I should have a name which denotes that I am a female tradesperson? or Stick with something more generic..?? I want to be taken seriously and not a kind of 'novetly' tiler/plasterer, but being a female is one of my USP's...dilema!

The area which I plan to work in has a lot of stay at home mums and eldery people who will be my target client group.

Thanks guys !!

Julz

The Gossiping Stone Gluer?

Lol names can be varied from using your own name, to a quirky name and then to using a professional business name. It really depends on what image you want to portray (ie family business, commercial business etc).

Hahah, might be an idea due to the amount of gossiping that goes on in Dalgety bay ! yeah had though of going down the quirky, easy to remember route. not just initials or something boring. thinking kinda family business as not really going into commercial field as yet. Thanks !!

Hi Julz,

Once you've posted another 10 or so posts give me a shout and I'll get you in the TilersForums Arms. We have a lot of business advice in there.

And Julz, if you do use Jewel ceramics... i can change your user name to that if required.. 🙂)) oh and welcome..

If thats who you are targeting, I think you should deffo go down the route of making that clear with your branding and trading name etc.

There is a market for this but I htink you should not limit yourself to that only though.

How long have you been in the trade for?

Hi Tfs

Literally just starting out. Still to do my first job for someone who's not a friend or friend of friend! Building my speed/confidence at the mo!

Yeah, don't want to put alienate any customers! So want to get the name spot on.. Hopefully will be working under it long enough!

Thanks for advice, really appreciate it!

Julz

There is a female trades team in Edinburgh. I have seen them advertise in the past but, I cant remember the name. Im sure the owner is a joiner.

i have met female plumbers and also there is a female painter n decorator in edinburgh with a nice pink van...bet they are busy

plenty women out there who dont like dealing with male trades i reckon

:welcome: to the forum young lady  IMO deffo go for a feminized name,as you are sort of targeting that market , and good luck to you in scotland :hurray:

Thank you! Hoping that playing on the female tradesperson thing will work in my favour! And a bonny pink van should help !

Cheers!

P.s cracking pools btw ! Once I've made my first million I'll get you to sort me out a wee plunge pool out the back!

personnaly i would not go down the pink fluffy route. a name that shouts girly airy fairy stuf will work for the women but the male customers wont like it. and might not take you seriously
i would find a name that is a normal type company name but catchy. then i would put the female tiler part in the 1 line sentance about your business.
that way you can advertise normally and also in female specific areas.

good luck in your endevers

female painter n decorator in edinburgh with a nice pink van...

Grrr don't get me started about her!!! Ran me off the road in her van by switching lanes with no indicators while I was alongside her in traffic. Then she slammed her breaks on in front of me and her break lights were out!!! I went insane!!! I know it's bad form to shout at a lady but if they nearly kill you twice within 5 minutes I'm sure it's allowed!!!

Rant over...

You should do a van up like this 🙂

Pink van, pink tools, pink uniform. It falls inline with your target market, and it's all part of your personal branding.

Nipping about in a pink van, working in (dare i say) a male dominated industry i really think that you'll do well. You certainly won't be easy to forget about 😉

Good luck.

try and get it with age concern as a recommended trades person the elderly might feel more comfortable with a woman.

Your right tho it is very male dominated and definatley think sticking out like a sore thumb will be the best advertising I can get!

And if quality of my work shows hopefully I will be taken seriously!

Thanks!

Good luck.[/QUOTE]

Funnily enough I currently work within the homeless scene, with vulnerable young women and have been asked by the charity to become the official 'handy type' person. Covering 2 hostels and some training flats.

Is there a specific way to become a recommended tradesperson? As was thinking of women's aid and other organisations like that ?

Thanks!!

Yeah think it's a fine line, as want to be taken seriously but also want to be instantly recognisable.

May go black van and pink livery. Luckily trained as a sign writer few years ago so hoping for a cheapo deal from old contacts!

Thanks!
